Bedroom essentials

The things you genuinely can't go without on day one:

Buy first

Bedding set

Single duvet, duvet cover, pillowcases, flat sheet. Most student rooms have a single or small double bed.

Buy first

Mattress protector

Waterproof. Protects the mattress, required if you ever want to return a mattress during a trial period.

Check first

Mattress

Confirm whether the room comes furnished. If not, see our mattress guide — order well before move-in day.

Useful

Desk lamp

Student house rooms often have harsh overhead lighting. A good desk lamp makes late-night studying much less unpleasant.

Useful

Extension lead with USB

Student rooms are famously short on sockets. A 4-socket extension with USB-A and USB-C ports solves everything.

Hangers and organiser

Slim velvet hangers — pack far more into a student wardrobe than wire or plastic ones. Under-bed storage boxes also earn their keep.

Admin checklist — sort before you arrive

  • Broadband booked — 2–3 week setup time. See broadband guide
  • Contents insurance bought — takes 10 minutes online. See insurance guide
  • Bank account opened — if you don't have one already, Monzo and Starling are the easiest for students
  • Student loan confirmed — SAAS (Scotland), SFE (England), SFW (Wales), or Student Finance NI for NI students
  • GP registered — register with a local GP practice near your Belfast address before you need one
  • University enrolment confirmed — IT account, student card, library access
  • 16–25 Railcard purchased — if you'll travel home or around NI by train. Buy here
  • Amazon Student signed up — 6 months free Prime. See our guide

Nice to have (but not essential)

  • Mini fridge for your room (if the shared fridge is a battleground)
  • Fan (Belfast summers are warmer than you'd expect)
  • Door stopper (for social vibes in halls)
  • Command strips / hooks (for putting things on walls without ruining the deposit)
  • First aid kit (plasters, paracetamol, ibuprofen, antihistamines)
  • Portable charger / power bank
Don't buy everything at once Order the essentials before you move in (bedding, mattress protector, kitchen basics). Wait until you've been in the house a week before buying anything else — you'll discover quickly what's already there and what you actually need.
